Gretraches Family History Organisation

Vivat Greatrakes semper virescat

Purpose and rationale of site

Purpose

The Gretraches Family History Organisation is an informal, voluntary contact group for anyone wishing to contribute their knowledge, generally participate or who have an interest in the Greatorex, or one of the variant spellings, family name.

Rationale

Greatorex, or Gretraches/Greatrakes, as it was known in medieval times, is a surname which comes from a place name. It originated from Gretraches, a small farming settlement in the high peak of Derbyshire situated between Buxton and Tideswell and which is now known as Great Rocks Dale. In modern times Great Rocks has been a small hamlet consisting of just a handful of farms, and was even smaller still in the medieval period.

Due to the way in which the name has been taken as a surname, from a place name which was just a farmstead in medieval times, it is likely that all people carrying the name are related (a one name family) to each other and to the original Gretraches who took the name sometime between 1150-1250AD.

This website is a focal point for the members of the Gretraches Family History Organisation.

Our aims are:-

  • To share genealogical knowledge of the many Greatorex (or its many variant forms) families from around the world.
  • To encourage any person who holds the name to join the group
  • To research the Gretraches family history
  • To research the ethnicity of the family through Y-Chromosome DNA
  • To inform and entertain those who visit the site
